Last Friday Patti Smith went up on stage, once again, to hypnotize the audience with her natural and pure charisma, but this time the writer was the main character while the musician was an interlude guest.
After winning the National Book Award for nonfiction for her memoir Just Kids, in which Patti tells the story of her relationship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and their life in the bohemian New York scene of the late 60’s and 70’s, the punk rock poet read and sang in the Miami Book Fair International at Miami Dade College.
The crowd invited Patti Smith to the stage to recite the poem “A black, E white, I red, U green, O blue: the vowels”, from one of her favorite authors, Rimbaud. After the artistic and inspiring atmosphere was set, Patti Smith appeared wearing her iconic outfit: jeans, boots and a white blouse covered with a black suit jacket. After admitting having stolen a copy of Rimbaud’s Illuminations when she was not able to afford it, although she “wouldn’t support that at the Miami Book Fair”, she grabbed her book and started reading essential passages from Just Kids.
She remembered the day when she met Robert Mapplethorpe, their experiences together sharing lettuce soup in a small room in New York’s Chelsea Hotel, her first encounter with Allen Ginsberg in an Automat when he added an extra dime to buy her a sandwich, and the day when she got into the Chelsea and ran into Jimmi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Towards the end of her readings, she shared with the audience one of the most important moments of her career: the night when she wrote the lyrics for Bruce Springsteen’s drafts of Because the Night. Patti was waiting for her boyfriend to call, it was around 7pm, the hours passed by: 8, 8:30, 9, 12; finally, at 1:30 the phone rang and by then, the song was finished.
After telling this story she put her book full of bookmarkers away, she stood straight in front of the microphone, and after waiting for a few minutes and admitting she was nervous, she sang Because the Night a cappella.

El viernes pasado Patti Smith subió al escenario, una vez más, para hipnotizar a la audiencia con su natural y puro carisma. Esta vez, la escritora fue la protagonista mientras que la música una artista invitada.
Luego de haber ganado el National Book Award de no ficción por su libro Just Kids, en donde relata la historia de su relación con el fotógrafo Robert Mapplethorpe y su vida en el circuito bohemio de Nueva York a fines de los ‘60 y principios de los ’70, la poeta emblema del puck rock leyó y cantó en Miami Dade College en el marco de Miami Book Fair International.
El público invitó a Patti Smith al escenario recitando el poema The Vowels, de uno de sus escritores favoritos: Rimbaud. Después de que el aire artístico e inspirador se hubiese esparcido por el auditorio, Patti Smith entró en escena usando su atuendo característico: Jeans, botas y una camisa blanca cubierta por un saco de traje negro. Después de admitir haber robado, en épocas de escases, una copia de Iluminaciones de Rimbaud , a pensar de :“no apoyar esa actitud durante la Feria Internacional del libro de Miami”, tomó su libro y comenzó a leer pasajes esenciales de Just Kids.
Durante la lectura recordó el día en que conoció a Robert Mapplethorpe, sus experiencias juntos compartiendo sopa de lechuga en un pequeño cuarto del hotel Chelsea en Nueva York, su primer encuentro con Allen Ginsberg en un local de comidas rápidas en donde él colaboró con 10 centavos para que ella pudiese comprar un sándwich y, el día en que entró al Chelsea y se encontró con Jimmi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Hacia el final de sus lecturas, compartió con la audiencia uno de los momentos más importantes de su carrera: La noche en que escribió la letra para el boceto de Bruce Springsteen de Because the Night. Patti estaba esperando que so novio llamara, eran alrededor de las 7 de la tarde, las horas pasaron: 8, 8:30, 9, 12; finalmente a la 1:30 el teléfono sonó y, para ese momento, la canción estaba terminada.
Después de contar esta historia, guardó su libro lleno de señaladores, se paró derecha frente al micrófono, luego de esperar unos minutos y admitir que estaba nerviosa cantó Because the Night a cappella.
