*WVUM has made it to the top 10 for an mtvU Woodie Award for the best college radio station in the United States. As one of the most innovative and fully functional college radio stations in the country, this award would establish WVUM’s presence nationwide.
The nomination for this award marks a year of outstanding achievement by WVUM. This school year alone the station has increased underwriting revenue by 70 percent and approached the mark of staffing 100 students. WVUM has also re-launched their website, www.wvum.org, to the community and released their re-branded image with new sticker, t-shirt and flyer designs.
“The WVUM staff works countless hours. We care about local community issues and try to bring them to the forefront, whether it is as an on air forum, through working with local non-profits or creating our own events to showcase up-and-coming music and art,” says Amber Robertson, WVUM’s General Manager. “Furthermore, we are the source for Hurricane Sports and continue to excel in public affairs and news programming.”
Since 1968, WVUM has been striving to establish themselves as a station with the prominence possessed today. With an mtvU Woodie Award under its belt, the University of Miami as a whole would be recognized for its prestigious broadcasting education, bringing the Electronic Media Program and the School of Communication into focus as a top contender nationwide.
Voting for the Woodie Awards will end on Tuesday, March 1. Voting is open to the public, and each person may vote as many times as he likes. About WVUM
WVUM is the noncommercial and fully student run radio station broadcasting out of the University of Miami. Since its inception in 1967, as a pirate radio station hidden in the Mahoney dormitory, The “Voice” has evolved into a nationally recognized leader in college radio, broadcasting eclectic and singular music programming (with a slight electronic bent), public affairs/news content and excellent sports programs (reflective of the U’s athletic programs).
Licensed to Coral Gables, Florida, WVUM serves the University of Miami and the surrounding Miami communities. The radio station operates on 1,300 Kilowatts and has an approximate radius of 15 miles, as well as a stream of programming broadcast worldwide on wvum.org. A power increase currently in the works, and will expand the station’s reach.
