Internationally minded and with nothing to lose, Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS) is one of the most renowned groups from South America. Formed in São Paulo, Brazil, CSS seduced the international indie and electro rock scene with their self-titled debut album in 2006. “Let’s Make Love and Listen to Death from Above”, “Artbitch” and “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” were some of the most hyped songs of that year. “Donkey”, their second studio album, was released two years later, and with “Left Behind”, its first single, CSS scored another hit on the alternative dance floors.
Days before their show at Ultra Music Festival, Lovefoxxx, CSS front woman, crashed WFK for a chat. In this exclusive interview she talks about CSS free spirit, their upcoming album, and Miami.
WFK: Provocative, spontaneous and bilingual – CSS is the avant-garde electro group from South America. What does being “avant-garde” mean to you? Do you agree with that statement?
CSS:We never said we are this or that… People title us with what they want. I don’t think we’re avant garde because we are not the kind of group of people that’s creating tendencies. I think we are true to ourselves and are always doing what makes sense to us at the time. People usually come to us for a fun time.
From the beginning you have been holding the “DIY” flag. What school did you attend to get such a degree?
I went to “no-school”. I started working in fashion when I was 16 with a mentor.
The DIY [Do it Yourself] mantra is all about imperfection, aesthetic, and characteristic. It’s a sense of doing what you know you can and not wanting anyone else to do it for you.
“Music is my boyfriend, music is my girlfriend”, has become a popular saying, –I even heard about some parties named after your song. How did you come up with that declaration?
We were covering everything something could be…. since it was already a big sized bed… why not the one who keeps your feet warm?
Through my CSS investigation I found out you are already working on the artwork of your new production. How important is the graphical representation to your music? Are graphics and lyrics parallels to each other?
We do the songs, why not do the cover? I think it stays true to what you are at the present time. If I’d do the cover for the 1st album again I’d do it differently… but that’s because I changed.
For this round Luiza took photos in our friend’s gallery “Gorker” in Melbourne, Australia, and I’m working on the rest. Including laying out everything for the insert. The Cover image has a LOT to do with the spirit and title of the album. Our biggest concern with IMAGE in general is that it represent us. We always want to REPRESENT it, you know? Be proud of what we put out.
Can you give us a hint about your upcoming album?
Sure. It’s a very inspired album. It has a strong Spanish influence. We were all in a deal of great spirits on the making of it. It has freedom and the chase of dreams in it. It’s about being yourself, finding your gang, and ruling a piece of the world, your own world. It’s also about weed, pizza, black lipstick and hints of Almodovar.
If you’d have to write a song about Miami, how will it sound like and what would it say?
Even though when I think of Miami I think of Dexter Morgan, a fried egg, and a french press in the morning, the song would sound like Tom Tom club and it would say “Under the boardwalk… out of the sun.. Under the boardwalk we’ll be having some fun…”
::WFK Music quiz with Lovefoxxx::
Miami tastes like… watermelon with salt and sunscreen
What inspires you? a beautiful penis. Coffee.
What’s your heaven like? a beautiful penis and being high on coffee without having headaches or the shaking.
Cassette, CD, vinyl or mp3? Cassettes for mixtapes. Vinyl for keeping. Mp3 for the anxiety. Cd’s… I always loose them.
The first record ever that you remember buying: Spice Girls (the 1st one) when I was 11. I was a late bloomer.
The last record that you purchased or downloaded: purchased: Reptilians by Starfucker = super amazing album.
CSS’ top 5 music wise (song, artist or genre) : myself: Prince; Adriano: David Bowie; Carol: Sonic Youth; Ana: L7 Luiza: Magnetic Fields
What song, from other artist, do you admire to the point you wished you have composed it yourself? Add it Up by Violent Femmes – because it’s has the best lyrics, best melodies, it’s the song I’d listen if I could choose one before dying.
You would kill to play in the same stage with: –Why? Tom Tom Club. We saw a bit of their show in Japan just before we hopped on stage and they all looked hot and amazing and they were having SO MUCH CRAZY FUN. They were rolling on the floor and dry humping eachother.
Freedom in your own words: “FUCK GOD, BELIEVE IN YOURSELF” – these are not my words … it’s written on my desktop wallpaper i got it from a friend’s tumblr. or “THE FIRE PURIFIES”… this is from Almodovar though… I’d say “Be present and REPRESENT”
