One of our favorite artists is coming to town this Saturday night! Peaches, the eletroclash queen, will be spraying champagne and playing some of her awesome tunes on Grand Central`s stage!
Last year Peaches produced a grand opera based on her own songs, which included more than 40 people on stage, called Peaches Does it Herself. She also made her own version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Jesus Superstar (Peaches Superstar), an under-appreciated endeavor that was banned by Webber himself because he is currently doing his own production .
After a 2010 full of unusual performances, Peaches is ready to turn Miami`s crowd insane by hosting a terrific party!
With an adorable I- just- woke- up voice, Peaches answered her phone yesterday morning almost ready to face WFK`s questions.
WFK : Polemic, provocative and sexually explicit, it’s difficult to imagine you in your early days as a music and drama teacher in an elementary school. Did you ever have any complaints from any students parents or were you a different person back then?
I’m a different person every day, every single day.
Why did Merrill Nisker decide to create Peaches’ concept of art?
The art concept behind Peaches is not really calculated, I just wanted to write some songs and it evolved. It wasn’t really a concept from the beginning. And the name came from a Nina Simone song.
Singer, composer, producer and now, since your participation in Ivory Tower, actress. What does an art project need to have for you to participate in it?
One element that really strikes me. Whether is a particular element that I believe in, or a song that I think it’s really great or, sometimes, just friends doing a project in a community.
Last year was pretty intense for your career, you produced an opera based on your musical works, and starred in a one-woman production of JesusChrist Superstar (called Peaches Christ Superstar). What has been the most challenging moment for Peaches so far?
I’m constantly challenging myself for doing new things. What challenges me…? From the beginning is keeping my performances in a certain level, changing certain songs and things like that.
Being an artist in a label and not being the biggest selling artist it`s also challenging. When you make really good art and they have to do that part of promoting but you are not the biggest artist in their label that`s always challenging to you. If you are doing so much but then, on the other end, you are not making so much money, that it´s always challenging.
After the release of “I Feel Cream” you said that you were ready to expand your sound. I heard that you have been working in new songs. Are you planning to release a new album soon?
Not soon, no. My next mayor project is that I`m gonna be producing another
band. I’m gonna be producing a Taiwanese girl band called Go Chic in October and then I`m gonna be studding opera.
“Girl power” and “do it your self” are some of your mottos, is there any other?
The most important thing for me is to find creativity and then act from there,
because there are lots of people that they block out they creative side and they go trough life feeling that they are not part of themselves, you know what I mean?
I recently saw a video of your DJ/MC set in Moscow, it was pretty paramount.Do you take the dancers with you to every DJ show or do you have a different set up depending on the city that you are playing in?
No, it’s different. For Miami there won’t be dancers but it’s gonna be really exciting. It’s very spontaneous and sometimes people come trash up to dance and there is a lot of involvement anyway and it’s always a good feeling and a great party.
What are the essential elements of a Peaches performance?
Just connection with the audience and elements of surprise.
