Obituary

No matter what you’re into, this weekend brings together Metal, Fusion, 80s glam, soul and a little blues – just a smattering of the variety of bands playing live. Friday night, the choices are heavy death metal with Obituary and others over at Grand Central, or saccharine 80s electronic with Parallels at Vagabond. Rich Latin sounds mix with soulful ones on Saturday, when Soul Rebels and Locos por Juana take the stage on The Stage on Saturday night. Also playing on Saturday is fusion band Xperimento over at Jazid. The weekend wraps up with a special celebration party on Sunday night, where Jay Blues Band, Skinny Jimmy and the String Rays, and Broken String Revival take the stage at Churchill’s Pub.

We had a chance to catch up with John Tardy from Obituary, who let us know about some of the crazy things happening on their world tour:

WFK: What’s the most ridiculous thing you have seen on tour? Either on this tour, or any tour.
John: There are so many things over the years and I could really go on. Because we are headed to S. Florida tomorrow, I remember once at a show in Ft. Lauderdale someone in the pit got there upper lip bit off. The guys was just hanging out after the show and talking to me and with his mouth closed I could see his front teeth. I was like dude, you need to go to the hospital!!! Crazy!

WFK: What are you looking forward to seeing in Miami?
John: The Heat…Beating the Pacers…I am glad they play tonight that is for sure. As you may or may not know, I was born in Miami and love going down there. It has been a while since we played a show down in Miami and I can’t wait! We have some great fans down that way!

WFK: What is your idea of the perfect show?
John: We really just had one a couple weeks ago in Santiago, Chile. The perfect show starts with a great P.A. It just gives you all the confidence in the world knowing that out front it is going to sound just like you want it. When you walk out on stage the whole crowd just is so into it that there eyes never leave the stage and the set just seems to flow together as one! It seems like every night something is not right or perfect. It is always the P.A., monitors, club or venue, maybe not feeling great or something…but when it all comes together it is what keeps you going!

WFK: Who would you love to perform with, living or dead?
John: Not sure about performing with him, music styles are so different, but maybe hang out, have a few cool ones and just be able to watch Stevie Ray Vaughn…again!

WFK: What albums or bands are you currently listening to?
John: We have been really wrapped up with writing a new album so, for me, I don’t listen to very much music when we are writing. I have so much in my head when we write I just like to stay focused on our music but, I have been listening to a lot of Hank III and the Reverand Horton Heat!!!

You can catch Obituary and all of their face melting awesomeness this Friday night at Grand Central. This will be their first Miami show since 1997.

Friday

Obituary | Grand Central

8 pm, $22 Presale tickets

Death Metal might be a jarring contrast to some of the typical shows that can be seen at Grand Central, but this Friday promises to melt your fucking face off. Headlining band Obituary is set to the stage in Miami for the first time since 1997, and is joined by some pretty awesome company. Opening up for them: Massacre, Hellwitch, and Thrash or Die!

Parallels | Vagabond

10pm

There’s something about Holly Dodson’s voice just sucks you in – and makes you want to dance. This Friday, Canadian group Parallels brings their eccentric mix of 80s glam and electro to Vagabond this Friday. Their newest album, XII, will be out in June, but make sure to keep an ear out for their first single, ‘Moonlight Desires’.

Saturday

Xperimento| Jazid

11 pm

Apart from being nominated for a Grammy and being named the Best Fusion Band by Miami New Times, Xperimento has continued to bring together the best elements of different genres together to create: ‘Latin Reggae Urban Soul’. See how this all blends together when they perform at Jazid on Saturday night, starting at 11 pm.

Soul Rebels | The Stage

10 pm, $10 in advance/$12 at the door

Soul Rebels have a brand new album out entitled Unlock Your Mind, and they are celebrating it with a two night album release party, beginning Friday night. Saturday night is part deux of the celebration, and joining them is none other than Locos por Juana. While the Rebels bring soulful New Orleans flavor to the stage, Locos por Juana will be representing their hometown with their distinct Latin sound.

Sunday

Shameless Burlesque Four Year Anniversary Party | Churchill’s Pub

9 pm

The Shameless Burlesque troupe is celebrating their fourth anniversary, and some of Miami’s best local bands are playing in celebration. Swing by on Sunday to catch the Jay Blues Band, Dangerfun Sideshow, Skinny Jimmy and the Sting Rays, plus Broken String Revival. Apart from the music and shows from the ladies, there will also be a car show right outside the pub, courtesy of Over Drive Sundays.

Get your headphones ready, as a slew of new music is coming to fuck up your ear buds in the best way possible. Between a solo EP from Ben Browning of Cut Copy fame, an exclusive live performance download from My Morning Jacket, and a rare talent in the form of Jesca Hoop there’s plenty to be excited about. The Hundred in the Hands just released the alluring “Keep It Low” single off their upcoming 12” to be released later in May. Also coming up are the eclectic sounds from Dot Hacker, which can be heard with their brand new first album, Inhibition.

Usually the term ‘solo project’ elicits nothing shorts of groans or fear, but in the case of Ben Browning, Cut Copy fans can feel excitement. Dreamy vocals meet smooth, catchy beats on Lover Motion, Brownings’ first solo attempt. Joining Browning on this EP are Gus Franklin + Haima Marriott from a little band called Architecture inHelsinki, but mostly lent a hand with the final touches. This EP is light and carefree, which is perfect for the upcoming lazy summer days.

We had a chance to chat with Browning about his upcoming solo project:

WFK: What differences are there between this album & your work with Cut Copy?
BB: The obvious difference is that Dan Whitford is the main songwriter in Cut Copy and I wrote the material for my own EP. I think the interesting aspect of Cut Copy and my own project is that both are influenced by dance music and experimental pop, but I have a background which was more focused on the music tradition and Dan’s background was as a dj/producer. We have both arrived at similar points of interest from fairly opposite directions.

What are your major influences for your solo work?
There are so many. I am constantly influenced by older pop stuff like John Lennon and Brian Wilson. Jean Michael Jarre

What song on this album did you love to create?
I think the main single I Can’t Stay was interesting for me because it was created as a fairly dance orientated track. I wanted the disco guitar and the main keyboards to really drive the song along. It was later I was inspired by the African highlife guitar and garnished the track with snippets of my own impersonation of that style.

What song from this album are you looking forward to performing live most?
Obviously I Can’t Stay is fun because people recognize that one the most. I also love playing Mistaken Images because it’s quite restrained and is more vocal driven, it’s a stand out in the set for me.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?
Jim Henson.

Check below our Top Album picks for this month…

My Morning Jacket

With all of the summer tours and festivals rolling through, it’s hard to keep track. One you definitely don’t want to miss though: My Morning Jacket. Joining them on tour is Band of Horses, which is sure to be an amazing show. Best of all, the Ben Bridwell of BOH has linked up with My Morning Jacket to record a very special live version of “Wonderwall (the way I feel)” which was recorded at MSG. Get the free download here.

Jesca Hoop combines a haunting voice with deeply thoughtful lyrics on her latest release, The House That Built Jack. The album will be released on June 26, but the first single ‘Born To’ has the kind of power to get stuck in your head for hours. Profound themes regarding life, love, war, and circumstance can all be found on this incredibly personal follow up album from Hoop.

The Hundred in the Hand’s Keep it Low

The Hundred in the Hands latest single “Keep It Low” is a dramatic and sultry song that is completely unforgettable. Eleanore Everdell’s voice is perfectly coupled with the entrancing melody in this song. The 12” inch single will be released on May 28, and will feature a B side entitled “Mountains”. Four exclusive remixes will also be available on this single from Andy Stott and Pattern, plus two from JD Twitch of Optimo.

Dot Hacker’s Inhibition

Dot Hacker is comprised of four musicians with four very distinct sounds: Josh Klinghoffer, Clint Walsh, Jonathan Hischke, and Eric Gardner. The members of this band have played with a wide variety of artists – Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gnarles Barkley, and Beck, to name a few – which would explain the complete mix of genres heard in their first album, Inhibition. Their first single, “Order/Disorder” perfectly showcases the blend of styles.

Indie goes pop with spinal taps, tribal prints, and colorful geometric designs. This online boutique has an Afro chic/grunge vibe with their shredded cropped t’s featuring Deuces and statements like “Hater’s Gonna Hate Cus We Black and They Aint”. Designer Kelly Wilson began Indiegoespop as a way for her to follow her passion for fashion after leaving the military. Interning for several designers and assisting designer Nakimuli she took all the eccentric patterns that had been filling her mind as a child and put them on head scarfs, bags, and pin badges.

Kelly has made head scarfs an important component of Indiegoespop to keep a strong historical connection to black women, not to mention that head scarfs can be worn casually and glamorously. Her prints range from the Nebula and Starburst solar system to the Navajo and G-raF (and yes, that is an actual giraffe print). Not to mention Indiegoespop has a price range that is extremely budget friendly with shirts starting at $3o and head scarfs at $25.

This week Miami is invaded by one of the most popular conventions of the year Exxxotica. With it comes a slew of sex driven parties with half naked women and men ready to party and looking to close the night out with a bang The convention is 3 days long and there’s plenty to see, hear, and touch! Also this weekend there are a few tribute parties, Steve Aoki who will without a doubt be pouring vodka down some hipsters throats, and live shows by Miami’s own Little Beard. It’s going to be a hell of a party.

Thursday May 17, 2012
Grand Central 697 North Miami Ave Downtown Miami

Yes he’s back and louder than ever. Everyone’s favorite asian hipster king has return to Miami to melt your face off with some heavy electro and the infamous hardcore serenades. If you have never seen Aoki perform and I first wondering what rock you have been hiding under and second I would suggest you go and check him out. He’s a great act to see and the crowd alone will be worth the cash you spend on a ticket. Kids love to rage to this guy. Mike Deuce will be holding down the night after Aoki has had his way with you.

Friday May 18, 2012
Bardot 3456 N.Miami Ave Midtown Miami

Little Beard have been in the Miami music scene coming on a few years now. They are a constant reminder of what good music sounds like and how a band can evolve to new sounds without loosing it’s unique touch as well as it’s street cred. with their fan base. They grace the stage or shall I say floor this Friday at Bardot. Also making an appearance is MAD DECENT’s PAUL DERVO. A sick DJ signed to one of the most bad ass labels in the country.

Last Saturday, fifth of May, when some had thick black mustaches and Mexican hats, some other were howling at the full moon, and some of us were experiencing the first home game of the first ever Miami Roller Derby team, Miami Vice City Rollers.

A sport? Yeah, but most likely, a family. If there’s something watching a bunch of girls decked in hot pink, fish nets and mini skirts, mobbing around in circles, yelling, pushing, and racing with their lives makes you wanna do, is be part of something. The sisterhood, the comrade, the support, and the fun perceive but all of us is priceless.

Do not underestimate this sport. It’s rough, but is real. We spoke with Olga “La Bandida” Montealegre #1337 after the game vs. Bradentucky Bombers. This is what she had to share with us….

                                                    Pictures by Federico Arevalo

*English bellow*

Ellas fueron: Shaman, El Milano, Camión, Hongo, The Falcons, Thes Siniestros, Crema del Cielo and Mostruo!

WFK: ¿Cómo surge la idea de editar I’m From La Plata?

¿Cómo y por qué países se va a distribuir I’m from La Plata?

¿Quién te gustaría que escuche I’m From La Plata?

—ENGLISH VERSION—

Have you ever listened to music coming from La Plata?
La Plata isn’t only the capital city of the province of Buenos Aires it is, in fact, one of the most important cultural metropolis in the country. This city, known for the impressive amount of universities located in it, has one of the richest Argentinian music traditions. Every two days a new band of a different genre and style is born out of the minds of students that come from all across the country and even from different parts of South America.

La Plata’s music is mostly known among music enthusiasts and has always created an aura of exclusiveness and cult around it. In other words, not everybody knows about La Plata music–but that is about to change…

Marcelo Pilegi a musician and producer from La Plata, who is currently living in France, came up with a great idea: editing a vinyl and including songs from sixteen different bands from La Plata. The record is going to be edited in France and distributed all across Europe, Mexico, Japan and of course, Argentina.

A few days ago, an event for raising funds for the international edition of this project, was held in a mythical La Plata venue, Pura Vida Bar. During that night eight bands were part of the project, and played divided in two stages. These bands were: Shaman, El Milano, Camión, Hongo, The Falcons, Thes Siniestros, Crema del Cielo and Mostruo!

WFK had a chance of interviewing Marcelo Pilegi and we were able to dig a little more into what his motto is about and what he aims to accomplish with this initiative.

WFK: How did you came up with the idea of editing I’m From La Plata?

This idea is a way of satisfying my personal desire of being able to listen to music from La Plata but from a vinyl, a really popular format here in Europe. I though that we needed to make something that lasts in time, something representative of the beautiful musical period that our city is going through.
I shared my idea with Tano Cacavo (lead singer of Villelisa), and we finished it together. We came up with the idea to organize an event to raise money for the release. When I realized that a lot of people wanted to help with the project, I convinced myself that it was possible.

Why do you think that the music from La Plata deserves a vinyl?

I think that the independent music that is played in La Plata stands out because it’s being composed with a lot o freedom, and is not corrupted by the pressure of success. Without those stress factors, the bands edit and produce their own stuff, help each other, and depend only of their time for doing things. In this context, art comes out naturally and the result is really interesting.
This is a project that includes musicians, journalist, photographers, designers and many people that do different things but always just for their passion for art.

What do you think is the importance of the bands from this city not only in the national but in the Spanish speaking musical context?
The bands from this city have a lot of personality, they compose beautiful songs and I think that a lot of them don’t enjoy the fame that they really deserve. The last independent musical productions from La Plata showed that they had a national and international artistic potential. Proof of that are bands like El Mató a Un Policía Motorizado, Shaman and Guacho, among others, that have recently toured around Europe. All of them independent musicians but with the quality of any mainstream artist.

How did you manage to pick the bands that are going to be included in the release?
I had chosen a lot of bands, but then I had to pick only 16 because the maximum amount of minutes that you can record in a vinyl is 64. I liked all those bands to the point of being able to choose as well the songs that are going to be included in the record.
For this first project, my selection is limited only to the albums that were released between 2010 and 2012. But after I would like to edit a volume 2 with songs of really good bands from the 90’s and 00’s that don’t exist anymore.

How and where are you going to distribute I’m from La Plata?
First of all, we are going to distribute it here in Europe staring with France, Spain, and Germany; then we are also going to send it to Mexico and some copies are going to be shipped to Japan. Of course, there will be a mayor distribution in Argentina. This is going to be done in a really personal and independent way, it’s going to be available only in small record stores and supported by people who are truly compromised with art and not by big companies that may destroy the real essence of this release.

If you had the chance of giving a copy of I’m from La Plata to any human being … Who would it be?
If you allow me to dream I would love that David Byrne would listen the record, the bands and the songs, and to really pay attention. I imagine that he is somebody who could even get interested and spend 64 minutes of his life listening to the things that are happening in La Plata. I’m not sure about this… but I think he could even get so involved to the point of producing some of these bands. Getting back to real world… I’ve notice that there is a lot of people with a kind of a cultural power [deficiency], from different places and even from La Plata, who don’t know or care about what is going on in the city and are not aware of its huge potential. I hope this compilation will be useful for them to get to know at least a small portion of what is going on in a reality not so far away from them.

This city is full of surprises—it isn’t rare to find the most amazing and contagious beings, especially when it comes to those with good energies, great music, and faces caked with smiles. Lately, we’ve been interacting a lot with the girls and talent of the drums- and-synths duo, The State Of. What did we discover? Not surprisingly, the most down to earth, pleasant-to-be-around, and humble musicians. Stef Taylor and Nabedi Osorio are the ladies meriting all these compliments and more.

Nabedi will soon leave to LA to continue pursuing her musical career, but before her departure we wanted to have an intimate and heartfelt conversation… Check out our interview + photos of her last Miami performance at The Vagabond this past Friday.

“Supernatural jewels for surrealist darlings. Made with love and blood in Philadelphia”. These are the words that Bloodmilk uses to describe its mysterious and dark romantic jewelry. Founder JL Schnabel fills her most current look book with mystical implications of a spirit world beyond our own with statements such as “At night I conjure your name into the absence of sound. I breathe it into the musk of our darkness. Shadows collect in the corners, become whole. I’m cornered.”

Rings in the shape of conjoined raven claws clasping at black diamonds give off an Edgar Allan Poe haunting eerie-ness. She even has a ring in the shape of a planchette (a heart shaped piece of wood used for Oija boards), for those that need to be ready to contact the spirits at any time of day. But it’s her messenger crow claw quartz crystal ring and bear tooth engagement ring that really sets in Bloodmilk’s dark sense of romanticism by looking for lost life in bones, teeth, and tears.

Bloodmilk takes jewelry to a spiritual and physiological level by exploring the temporariness of life and what is real and unreal. One conjoins fantasies of dates in graveyards wearing upside down cross leggings, raven claw rings, and crystal tomb necklaces, looking for life in the darkness of the corners.
